How did the Magna Carta influence the Constitution?. (n.d.). Retrieved from https://study.com/academy/answer/how-did-the-magna-carta-influence-the-constitution.html
“In 1215, English nobles forced King John to sign the Magna Carta Libertatum, a document guaranteeing the rights of freemen against the whims of the monarch. The Magna Carta was the first document that suggested that people had certain rights that were to be protected no matter what, but it would not be the last.
Many states did not want to ratify the U.S. Constitution without certain protections attached, as this was one of the reasons a division from Britain was sought. The American people didn’t want to give too much power to a central government that could eventually turn on them, so a bill of rights was added in 1789. These first ten amendments to the Constitution guaranteed personal liberties and rights, including the rights of habeas corpus and due process of law. The Magna Carta influenced the U.S. Constitution by providing a heritage and a historical background for a document that guaranteed citizens’ rights, and there are several passages in the documents with similar wording.”
