Request TL Support

Teacher Librarians and Library staff provide a range of support services for teachers to enrich learning experiences and more.

You may request any of the services listed below emailing the Library team at LIS@mlc.wa.edu.au or specifically:

Felicia Harris and Sammy Phillips for JY Library support.

Amanda Stewart, Vicki Steven and/ or Anna Buchan for MY/SY Library support.

While some requests may be able to be accommodated sooner, it is best to give us at least two weeks lead in time so as to get the best service. Some services may be subject to availability.

Curriculum Support

MLC Teacher Librarian’s can help support you meet the outcomes of your learning programmes in a number of ways. In particular, we specialise in teaching Information Literacy skills within the context of a learning task.

We can also assist you to meet the following ICT (Digital Literacy) General Capabilities of the Australian Curriculum:

Applying social and ethical protocols and practices when using ICT
Recognising intellectual property

Investigating with ICT
Define and plan information searches
Locate, generate and access data and information
Select and evaluate data and information

Create a Research Guide (i.e. Pathfinders)

In consultation with you we can create an online research guide to help your students locate a range of suitable resources for a particular Inquiry/ Research task and to develop search strategies. You can then embed the URL into your task briefs or in Seqta-Learn for easy access.  Take a look at some previous Course Support Guides we have already created.

Collaborate to develop an Inquiry Task

If you are planning an inquiry task a Teacher Librarian can help. If you’re not sure what you would like to do why not have a chat with one of the TLs.

Provide Inquiry Process Support

We can assist you and your students with any stage of the Inquiry Process:

  • defining the task and formulating questions
  • locating and selecting resources
  • organising information
  • creating the final product
  • evaluating and reflecting on learning

We can work with your whole class or a small group while they are working on an Inquiry.

The following webpages provide a range of different scaffolding resources that students can use to help them with various parts of the Inquiry Process.

Demonstrate using the Library Catalogue and/ or Online Databases

We can help you and your students get the most out of searching the library catalogue and/ or online databases to locate a variety of information sources.

Some of the online databases contain many useful features and extra resources for teachers too.

Contact us to arrange a demonstration for your staff team or for your class.

Searching the Internet

While the Internet is an amazing resource, we can’t always assume search engines can meet our information needs. We can help your students to:

use search engines more effectively
understand and search the “invisible web”
critically evaluate web search results
use wikipedia appropriately

ClickView Professional Development

Library staff can provide staff PD on how to get the most out of ClickView, from searching for video recordings using the library catalogue or ClickView Online, to accessing teacher resources, using your workspace, creating intereactive videos and playlists and more.  Get a staff group together and make a time with us to show you.

Or you can browse various ClickView training resources here.

Referencing and plagiarism

We can help your students to reference correctly and provide strategies to avoid plagiarism. Discuss your particular needs with us.

Resource Discovery

We can help you to find lesson plans, teacher’s notes and educational materials to support the curriculum and learning in your classroom. Just tell us the topic and what type of resource you are looking for.

Reading for Enjoyment

We can curate a suggested reading list on a topic, promote a genre or books related to a theme and we are always able to recommend fiction to suit student interests.

Copyright information for Remote & Online Learning
During the COVID-19 Outbreak

In Australia, The Copyright Act (1968) is a law that protects the rights of owners of original intellectual and creative works.

Please refer to the College Copyright Policy on the College Intranet to read the copyright responsibility of teachers at MLC.

Copyright Exception

Fair Use

Students may make use of exceptions under the Fair Dealing section of the Copyright Act.

The Fair Dealing exception allows students to use a reasonable proportion of a work, usually up to about 10%.

Fair Dealing exceptions cannot be used by teachers as they only apply for the purposes of one’s own research or study. Teachers will rely on licences paid for by the College (see Copyright policy).

Public Doman

Works that are in the Public Domain are allowed to be used freely without the permission of the copyright holder. Works usually go into the public domain 70 years after the creator dies if the copyright is not renewed.

Creative Commons

Creative Commons provides an alternative set of licenses that allows you to use, copy and adapt creative works under certain conditions. All of the licenses require a user to attribute (acknowledge) the original creator.
