A library online database is a digital collection of published works you are unlikely to find on the free internet. They are valuable tools for research and study, providing access to a wide range of organised and searchable information, such as academic journals, articles, newspapers, e-books, images, videos, and more.
Many articles within an online database undergo a rigorous peer-review process before publication, ensuring their credibility. This process involves experts in the field of study to critically assess the article’s quality and validity to maintain the integrity and high standards of academic scholarship. You can use database filters to narrow your search for “peer reviewed” articles.
Accessing online databases via your school library, university or public library can potentially save you money as many web-based articles are pay walled.
With onlines databases you can conduct targeted searches and explore content using various criteria such as topic, date, author, reading level and more.
You will be expected to use online databases in higher education, so it’s important to practice using them now. By the end of Year 10 students should be able to demonstrate advanced online search skills and using online databases is one way to demonstrate this.
There are many benefits to using online databases and it is important you practise using them to develop your lifelong learning skills.
If you need assistance with any of the databases please contact Library staff or email lis@mlc.wa.edu.au
