To find out how trade and other factors played their part in the spread of the Black Death and ultimately changed European society you will need to follow the process below.
Step 1 – The Roles (5 mins)
You should already know what role you are to play during this online activity. Find out more about your role by clicking on the character’s name.
Step 2 – Gather your Information (40 mins)
As part of your role, you will need to gather information related to your character. Follow the link to your character’s questions and information.
If you have any trouble understanding any words or terms check out the dictionary.
Step 3 – Same Role Group Discussion (10 mins)
Get together with others who share the same character as yourself (e.g. all rats in the same group). In this group, compare notes and fill in any blank spots or add extra information you may have missed. Your job is the become the expert on this information and take it back to your mixed group
Step 4 – Mixed Group Discussion (20 mins)
Make sure you have *Sheet 2* before you start your discussion.
- Introduce your character to the rest of the group
- Share what you have found out so far with the group
- Use the questions on Sheet 2 as the basis for a group discussion of your findings.

Step 5 – Effects (30 mins)
Each person in your group should now gather information about the changes to society in medieval Europe caused by the Black Death. Follow the link to your task and resources.
Make sure you use *Sheet 3* to record your information.
Step 6 – Same Group Discussion (10 mins)
Get together again with others who share the same character as yourself. In this group, compare notes and fill in any blank spots or add extra information you may have missed. Your job is to become the expert on this information and take it back to your mixed group.
Step 7 – Mixed Group Discussion (20 mins)

- Use what you found out about the effects of the Black Death with your group.
- Use the questions on Sheet 4 as the basis for a group discussion of your findings.
- Fill in the answers to the rest of the questions using the information provided by the other group members.
